Learner Centered Approaches – Applied to Safety Training

Learner  Centered Approaches I will be bringing to my  safety training

  1. Active Learning
  2. Collaborative Learning
  3. Problem Based Learning

Active Learning

For Example – “Load Securement” – Safety Talk

The activities I would do to bring Active Learning to my safety training…
1.  Questions: I would ask them how they secure a Cat to a lowbed trailer? What safety concerns we need to keep in mind while doing this?  What are the steps in strapping a cat to the lowbed?

2. Demonstrate:  I would have the learners load and bind a cat to a lowbed trailer.  I would have them demonstrate how to use the binders and chains.

3. Brainstorm:  How we could secure the load in a safer manner…get their ideas. we may need different chains and binders.. maybe certain trailers should only be used for certain equipment.  Promote discussion.

Learning Outcomes – Active Learning

  1. Learner will demonstrate the safe way to “secure a load” using our binders and trailers under regular working conditions, according to the safe work procedure outlined in our Safety Manual of Valley Rock Construction.
  2. Learner will analyze the way they bind a load currently, under regular work conditions according the safe work procedures outlined in our Safety Manual of Valley Rock Construction.
  3. Learner will improve on load securement procedures by analyzing/demonstrating using the binders, tools and drop deck trailer, performing the safe work procedure according to the standards outlined in the Safety Manual of Valley Rock Construction.

Evaluation  – Active Learning

Having learners demonstrate the task and use a checklist to make sure the Safe Work Procedure steps are followed and performed correctly

Improved Learning – Active Learning

Learners are PARTICIPATING and not just Listening.  They can’t just tune you out they are forced to pay attention and get involved in the class.  They are actively engaging in the learning process.

Collaborative Learning

For Example – Developing a new “Safe Work Procedure” for Load Securement with the new trailer – Safety Talk

The activities I would do to bring Collaborative Learning to my safety training…

1.  Sharing experiences:  Get the learners to talk about what other trailers and binding techniques in the past.  Ask them to share any near missed or incidents that may have occurred while binding a load.

2.  Debate – Pros/Cons:  *of that style of trailers for certain equipment

*Procedures for loading & hauling

                                           *Binder/Chain styles

Learning Outcome – Collaborative Learning

We will complete a new safe work procedure together using a current procedure and collaboration using the learners experience and knowledge, covering all the standards outlined in the Safety Manual of Valley Rock Construction

Evaluation  – Collaborative Learning

Evaluate new work procedure against the old procedure, taking into account new issues brought up by the learners and following the mandates and criteria of a safe work procedure defined in the safety manual of Valley Rock Construction.

Improved Learning – Collaborative Learning

The learners will develop team player skills.

The learners will improve their critical thinking skills

Problem Based Learning

Example:  What do you do if a wheel-loader loses power or has hesitation?-Safety Talk

The activities I would do to bring Problem Based Learning to my safety training…

1.  Ask Questions:  What do you check first when the loader loses power.  What is the problem most of the time?  What safety issues do you need to keep in mind when dealing with this problem?

2.  Facilitate:  After troubleshooting and finding the issue..How do you fix it.

3. Self assessment:
Have the learners evaluate the situation and what they may do next time?

Learning Outcome – Problem Based Learning

Learner will establish the problem and correct the the operation of the loader by exploring possible problems and eliminating issues considering safety issues outlined in the Safety Manual of Valley Rock Construction.

Evaluation  –  Problem Based Learning

If the loader runs better…they accomplished the problem – Success

Improved Learning – Problem Based Learning

With Success – builds confidence

Learners  -Develop flexible knowledge

-Effective problem solving skills

-Self directed learning abilities

Learner-Centered Teaching

I can Identify what the learners

-Know

-Past Experiences

-What they need to know

I then can focus my teaching to what the learners need

Web Quest – Workplace Safety for Cooperative Ed

This Web Quest if great for young workers…this one is aimed at grades 9 – 12 but it still applies to young workers under 25 years old.

The Canadian stats need to be used ..this Web Quest has USA stats. Using statistics for Manitoba would be even more effective…hitting close to home.

It needs a few more graphics/pictures to be more interesting and get through to the students the importance of safety in the workplace.

I need to develop quizzes/test to make sure the students have learned from the exercise. Testing for competence.

One task I would add to this Web Quest would be for the students to find an article/interview on a young worker that has got hurt on the job and how it is affecting them now.  What obstacles, challenges, and how their life has changed  from when they had the workplace accident.  I want the students to realize how important safety is and how it could really affect their future.

Another task I would add,  is to get the students to list situations when you can “Refuse to Work” and what criteria is required to”Refuse to Work?” Stressing the importance of refusing to work in unsafe conditions and they need the confidence to say “No” when they fell it is unsafe to work.

The students would make a poster visually explicating what they can do to contribute to their safety in a work environment.

10 Points to a Highly Effective Learning Environment

The mandate of the classroom – STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING..no matter the topic or subject.

1.  Students ask questions, rather than a lecture style and you do all the talking.  Get the involvement from the students.

2.  Questions are of more value than the answers. Value the questions by giving  them points/credits or developing a contest.  A great idea is the graffiti on large post-it notes around the classroom.

3.  Ideas come from Divergent Sources. Developing lesson plans, case studies, content and projects, using other professionals in the field of study, ideas from the students (what they would like to get out of the course), or real life situations.

4.  Use a variety of learning models.  A diversity of learning models in the classroom makes it possible for all student to absorb the content and be effective in their learning.  Doing projects, case studies, group projects, whatever would be effective for your criteria.

5.  What is learned in the classroom is usable in the work environment. The course content and delivery is real life and practical.

6.  Personalized Learning.  Finding out what the students need and the skills they already have.. and then adjust the lessons, assignments and pace of the course.

7. Assessment is clear and positive.  Feedback and comments are given immediately for opportunity for the student to improve immediately or adjust to what is required.  Emphasizing the positive and strengths of the student.

8.Criteria is laid out and detailed.  With a clear outline and expectations the students know what they have to do to be successful. The content is useful and meaning  full to the students and the topic.

9. Learning habits are constantly modeled.  Students learn from other students, situations and the environment. Introducing all learning habits into the classroom, cognitive meta-cognitive and behavioral.

10. There are never-ending opportunities for practice.  When the opportunity arises from situations or questions.. max out the learning potential for the student.

Creating the best possible learning environment in your classroom leads to success of the student and as a facilitator, you grow and learn to adapt to the changing environment and the diversity of the students.  The classroom is never the same even though you teach the same criteria..different students with different experiences and attitudes.  STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING
